2004’s Play First Game of Hit Hockey

The 2004 Can West team kicked off their season with two strong practices and an exhibition game against our friends from Bonnyville. There were a lot of nervous parents in the crowd (and coaches on the bench) from both teams, as this was the first official game of “hit hockey” for many of the players. The ’04 Chargers quickly found themselves down 1-0 in the opening minutes of the game. From there, nerves settled and the Chargers found their legs and executed the game plan. Goaltending for the home team was superb. Axtyn Spence (29) and Lucas Cadger (70) split the game and both goaltenders made some amazing saves to help keep the Chargers out of trouble.

#74 Colton Schmidt (Grande Cache) tied the game at one with an unassisted goal in the middle of the 1st period. It took half of the 2nd period before the Chargers would score again. That’s when Ashton Funk (Athabasca) bulged the twine with nice passes from #84 Carter An (Edmonton) and #89 Zaydin Nyuli (Westlock). Two minutes later, #44 Shawn Paul St. Arnaud (Westlock) scored the winner from Nyuli and Funk. St. Arnaud, with pure effort, was the consummate power forward on his goal. A thing of beauty.

The game was highlighted with many good clean hits. It was one of the best games I’ve witnessed in a long time. There were only 3 penalties the entire game. The Chargers had zero penalty minutes.

Best of luck to our 2004 team this season!
